How the healthy weight range is calculated
A healthy weight is usually defined by a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9. For South Asians, including Indians, health risks rise at a lower BMI, so Indian guidelines use 18.5 to 22.9.
Healthy weight = BMI limit × (height in metres)²
For someone 170 cm tall: 18.5 × 1.7² = 53.5 kg and 22.9 × 1.7² = 66.2 kg (Asian/Indian), or up to 72 kg on the WHO scale.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the Indian healthy range lower?
Indians tend to carry more body fat, especially around the waist, at the same BMI. That raises the risk of diabetes and heart disease at lower weights, so the cut-offs are lower.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not always. Muscular people can have a high BMI without excess fat. A waist measurement or body fat percentage gives a better picture.
