How to calculate a discount
Sale price = Original price × (1 − Discount ÷ 100)
A ₹2,499 shirt at 30% off: 2,499 × 0.70 = ₹1,749.30; you save ₹749.70.
Two discounts (e.g. "20% + 10% extra")
The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so 20% + 10% is a 28% total discount, not 30%: 1 − (0.80 × 0.90) = 0.28.
Find the discount percentage
Discount % = (Original − Sale price) ÷ Original × 100
Frequently asked questions
Is 20% + 10% the same as 30% off?
No. The extra 10% is taken off the reduced price, so the total discount is 28%.
How do I find the original price before discount?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). ₹1,200 after 25% off was ₹1,200 ÷ 0.75 = ₹1,600. You can also use the Reverse Percentage Calculator.
Is GST charged before or after the discount?
GST is charged on the discounted (transaction) price when the discount is shown on the invoice.
