How to use the recipe scaler
- Paste your ingredient list, one ingredient per line. Method steps can stay in; lines without a quantity are left as they are.
- Enter how many servings the recipe makes, and how many you want.
- Optionally convert units: Metric turns cups and spoons into grams (for dry ingredients it recognises) or mL (for liquids); US turns grams into cups and spoons.
Quantities such as 1 1/2, 1½, 0.75 and ranges such as 2-3 are understood, and units such as cup, tbsp, tsp, g, kg, ml, L, oz, lb and pinch are recognised in their common spellings.
Scaling tips
- Eggs: round to the nearest whole egg, or beat one and use part of it (one large egg is about 50 g without the shell).
- Spices, salt and chilli don't always scale in a straight line. Add about 75% when doubling, then taste and adjust.
- Baking: a bigger cake needs a bigger tin. Use the Baking Pan Converter to choose one, and check the cake early because baking times change with depth.
- Leavening (baking powder, soda, yeast) can usually be scaled directly for small changes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I halve a recipe?
Set the original servings (for example 4) and the new servings to half (2). Every quantity is divided by two and shown as a kitchen fraction, such as ¾ cup instead of 0.75.
Can it convert cups to grams for my whole recipe?
Yes. Choose Units → Metric. For ingredients it recognises, including flour, maida, atta, besan, sooji, sugar, butter, ghee, rice, dal, cocoa and oats, cups and spoons become grams. Liquids such as milk, water and oil become mL.
