URL Encode & Decode

Percent-encode text for URLs or decode %20-style URLs back to readable text. A URL parser splits any link into its protocol, host, path and a table of decoded query parameters, including UTM tags.

Encoding modes

  • Component (encodeURIComponent) encodes everything except A–Z a–z 0–9 - _ . ! ~ * ' ( ). Use it for a single query value, such as a search term or a redirect URL.
  • Full URL (encodeURI) keeps : / ? & = # so the link still works. Use it for a whole address that contains spaces or non-English characters.
  • Decode turns %20 into a space, %E2%82%B9 into ₹ and, optionally, + into a space (form encoding).

Frequently asked questions

Why does a space become %20 or +?

In URLs a space is encoded as %20. In HTML form submissions (application/x-www-form-urlencoded), it is encoded as +. Tick “Decode + as space” when decoding form data.
